Maramataka Māori is the rise and fall of the Māori lunar cycle. Our tupuna spent thousands of years observing the Taiao (environment) and passing their knowledge on to each successive generation. Our mission is to revive this practice to ensure our whanau are aware and connected.
With over 30 years experience in the building industry, Ahikaaroa Trust are leaders in the Rammed Earth Housing Whare Uku movement. We offer construction options, consultation, education and facilitation services.

E Pā Ana Ki A Mātou
The concept of ‘Whare Uku’ was originally conceived by Dr Kepa Morgan in 1994. A project was agreed to between Auckland University’s Engineering Department and the ‘Unaiki Mare Whanau Trust’ of Ahipara.

Our Maramataka Maori connects us to the environment. This maramataka is from our tupuna Ihaka Poata of Ngapuhi. We use the Maramataka for gardening and the reading of tides, but also determining the best time to do other activities such as holding whanau hui.
We believe the Maramataka is another taonga from our tupuna to assist at enhancing the well being of our whanau.
We have developed a unique colour code system to help whanau to easily read the cycles of the moon and forward plan your year. We hold Maramataka Wananga every Matariki.
Whare Uku / Rammed Earth Homes are quality, low maintence homes built using a sustainable model, with no pollution, using natural resources that will last for generations.
We build three bedroom earth homes including road access, construction, alternative energy and an eco waste system for $150,000*
There are Architect Plans for consented 1, 3 and 5 bedrooms homes available.
